Direct answer

No. The OTA describes an e-invoice as structured digital data exchanged for validation, not a paper invoice or PDF alone. A readable PDF may still be useful for a customer, but it does not replace the required structured document and provider workflow. Check the current rules for your transaction type.

The short version

  • The structured data is the exchange record.
  • A PDF is a human-readable copy, not proof of submission.
  • Keep the document ID and validation response with the sale.

What the cashier sees

Staff may still print or send a readable receipt. Behind it, the system needs a source sale, a mapped invoice, a provider response and a link between those records. A PDF generated before validation must not be labelled as an accepted Fawtara document.

What to ask your vendor

Request a demonstration with the structured invoice, its response status and the customer copy side by side. Include a rejected invoice. The answer should show how staff correct it without creating a second unrelated sale.

What to check in your own setup

  • Locate the structured invoice, not only its PDF.
  • Match the provider response to the POS transaction ID.
  • Test what the cashier sees when validation fails.

Questions people ask

Can the customer still receive a PDF?

A readable copy may be exchanged where the applicable OTA flow allows it. It is not, by itself, the Fawtara e-invoice.

Sources and verification

OTA and OpenPeppol material can change. Check the latest official version before making a tax or deployment decision.
